The course is based on the principles of participatory adult education. The method used is the communicative one, which brings out the communicative aspect of the language. Moreover, the course follows the principles of modern didactics of living languages, which gives emphasis to culture. During the course active learning and exchange of ideas and information about the two cultures are encouraged, while the experiences of the participants are incorporated into the training. The above mentioned methodology is implemented via a daily schedule which includes two hours of language instruction in Greek or in Turkish, and two hours of language workshop, where participants under the guidance of their trainers and based on the TANDEM method (mutual teaching and learning) have the opportunity to practice the language skills they have developed during the day through language games, role plays and other activities and practice oral skills. They also have the opportunity to better understand the cultural framework within which the linguistic types of Greek and Turkish are developed and used. A daily schedule of educational/ cultural activities is incorporated into the programme, enabling participants to become familiar with elements of the common Greek and Turkish culture. This additional programme of activities is considered as an inextricable part of the course, since it provides the participants with a better understanding of contemporary Greek and Turkish culture. A cornerstone of this programme is the contact and cooperation of the participants through their common interests and personal objectives.
At the end of the seminar, participants are expected: - To be familiar with the special linguistic characteristics of the Greek and the Turkish Language -To have developed all four language skills in Greek or in Turkish (reading and listening, speaking and writing), with emphasis in speaking -To have explored the contemporary Greek and Turkish reality, especially with their commonalities and differences (society, arts, history, nature) -to have met and contacted participants from Greece, Turkey and other European countries and to develop interpersonal and intercultural skills -To visit places of cultural significance for the relations of the two countries (Ottoman monuments in Lesvos) -To have exchanged intercultural elements and to take part in a process of osmosis of civilisations -to make this kind of meetings between Greeks, Turks and other Europeans an institution aiming at protecting peace, developing cooperation and promoting lifelong learning
