How did the Network begin? |

The Cultural Tourism Network of Lesvos was created in the summer of 2007, within the Action Plan “Destination: Cultural Lesvos”, which was coordinated by AEOLIS and funded by the Greek Ministry of Employment and Social Protection. The aim of this Action Plan is to bring out the advantages of Lesvos as a cultural destination,
and to promote its rich cultural tradition and contemporary artistic production to future visitors.
The necessity of a Cultural Tourism Network as well as the fact that its function and targets should be long-termed were obvious from the beginning, when various organizations and persons involved in tourism and culture had their first meeting in June 2007. Everyone present in this meeting agreed that the desirable outcome, i.e. the increase of visitors interested in the cultural tradition of the island, requires a stable and essential cooperation amongst all professional and volunteers involved in culture and tourism.
The Action Plan “Destination: Cultural Lesvos” was focused on the Municipality of Mytilene, since many cultural associations, museums and events are concentrated in the capital area. Nevertheless, the favorable response of many interested persons from other areas, who participated in the Network meetings from the very beginning, showed that this could be a project for the whole island of Lesvos. Since January 2008 AEOLIS coordinates the Network within a second part of funding of the Action Plan “Destination: Cultural Lesvos”, focused this time on the Municipality of Yera. |
